The sea was and, to a certain extent, still is a dangerous calling.  As the mariners in their ships sailed away, stories of shipwrecks and fire at seas, tales of abandoning schooners in fierce Atlantic storms and litany of missing ships became more numerous than ever.  Added to the ever-present natural hazards there were, in the 1930’s and 1940’s, new elements of risk for schooners – the rum smuggling trade, the threat of attack by enemy subs in World War Two and frequent collisions with large ocean liners steaming across the fishing grounds.
