SALTWATER
TALES: VOLUME II
By ROBERT PARSONS
The sea was and, to a
certain extent, still is a dangerous
calling. As the mariners in their
ships sailed away, stories of
shipwrecks and fire at seas, tales
of abandoning schooners in fierce
Atlantic storms and litany of
missing ships became more numerous
than ever. Added to the
ever-present natural hazards there
were, in the 1930’s and 1940’s, new
elements of risk for schooners – the
rum smuggling trade, the threat of
attack by enemy subs in World War
Two and frequent collisions with
large ocean liners steaming across
the fishing grounds. |
