THE MOUNTIES
A NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR
HISTORY
By Gerald Leahy
The Mounties is an interesting
account of the experiences of the
many hundreds of police officers who
have been fortunate enough to serve
in Newfoundland and Labrador. The
Newcomers who formed the vanguard in
April 1949 set the stage for the
Royal Canadian Mounted Police to
assume policing duties throughout
the Island of Newfoundland and
Labrador on August 1, 1950. The
force was fortunate to absorb within
its ranks members of the
Newfoundland Ranger Force and the
Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. The
book provides an account of the
impressions still recalled by some
of the original members. It also
traces the growth and significant
changes that have affected policing
in the Province. A Reader of The
Mounties will enjoy the humorous
anecdotal stories included. An
account of interesting cases is
included where there are factors
unique to Canada's Newest Province.
