GEORGE HALDEN EARLE
A Concert Unto Himself

By CYRIL POOLE

A proud son of Change Islands, Notre Dame Bay, George Earle enjoyed a long and distinguished career as an Anglican priest, serving parishes in England from 1940 to 1957 and as Provost of Queen's College from 1957 to 1979. But is was as folklorist and humourist that he was best known in Newfoundland and throughout the Atlantic region. The focus of this biography by his fellow bayman and longtime friend is Earle's rich outport heritage and his humourous celebration of it in writing and in upwards of a thousand after-dinner speeches.

George Earle was made a canon of the Anglican Cathedral in St. John's in 1971, and on his retirement in 1979 was awarded an honorary doctor laws degree by Memorial University of Newfoundland. In May 2000, he died at his home in St. John's.
