This brief chronology of the "Royal" Newfoundland Regiment covers
a brief forty year period of the regiment's more than two hundred year history.
The title "Royal Newfoundland Regiment" may at first suggest to some that what
follows is misleading. There is no intent to mislead, as the Newfoundland
Regiments, although fully raised in, and composed of Newfoundlanders over the
more than two centuries of its on again off again existence, have been called by
many titles. Some of the regiments have had the honour to have been
distinguished with the prefix "Royal" appended to their title, others have not,
and still more had been attached to other, long established British regiments
which already bore the prefix "Royal."
